Norwich Rugby club to Relocate to the University of East Anglia Grounds

Norwich Rugby Club and the University of East Anglia recently announced the plans to sell the Beeston Hyrne ground for development and relocate to Colney and the UEA sports field where a new facility, clubhouse, 4G pitch and so forth, will be built. The following comments were released to the press...

Norwich Rugby Club

The Norwich RFC membership overwhelmingly supported a proposal from their committee to relocate and share sporting facilities with the UEA at a Special General Meeting held at their current Clubhouse. The proposal involves the construction of new facilities at the Colney Lane sports fields to provide leading sports facilities for both Rugby Football and other sports following 18 months of discussion and negotiation. This is a tremendous and extremely exciting opportunity for both Norwich Rugby Club and the UEA and will provide stability and continuity for the future of the Rugby Club for a considerable time into the future as well as creating leading sports facilities for the University. The next steps are to progress the formal planning process in conjunction with the UEA and local community, including the Norwich Research Park and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.”

Steve Henson, Chair of Development Committee, NRFC

UEA

UEA is proud to be embarking on a partnership with NRFC to relocate their club to UEA and to provide increased and enhanced sporting facilities on our Colney Lane playing fields complex. After considerable work we have been able to present a favourable case to the NRFC membership and they have voted in favour of the relocation. The result will be much improved facilities for both UEA and NRFC and will enable us to once again open up their use to the wider community. This also provides a critical link between the UEA campus and the Norwich Research Park and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.

The next stage of the process will be to seek formal planning permission from South Norfolk District Council for the relocation, and then progress with the developments in 2016 to hopefully launch in the summer of 2017.” Phil Steele, Director of Sport, UEA
