Latest Chairman's message
The end of the season is now upon us and our thoughts are focussed on taking the club forward in to next season both on and off the field. Our AGM is being held on the Thursday 25th May 2017. Please come along to hear how we are doing and how we are looking to manage and respond to any challenges that we face. You will be receiving more details in the next week or so.Bob Annable
I am keen to ensure we start next season with pride in our facilities at Beeston Hyrne and there is work to be done throughout the summer to achieve that. We need more volunteers from our members to work with us . We also have some vacancies for next season most notably Chair of House , a Womens and Girls rugby coordinator and two general committee members. We need new and younger members to help us drive the club forward .
Please give this some thought ahead of the AGM and if anyone would like to put their name forward or understand how they can help I would be delighted to speak with you. My contact number is 07547072868.
Saturday 4th March is the ‘Harvey Back to Norwich’ day when we remember a great Clubman and friend to many Alan ‘Ziggy’ Harvey . It is always a great day for players past and present and it will be a really fitting occasion to see the First team put in a strong performance against Woodford a team they lost narrowly to earlier in the season.
The Team has shown real grit and determination and put in some excellent performances since the New Year. The game on March 4th is the penultimate home league game of the season and is anticipated to be a very entertaining match. With a ‘full house’ of supporters it will be a real opportunity to get behind the team with a wave of positive support – let’s make some noise!
January has been a positive month for the Club. The 1st XV have won both their crucial league games in style and are really starting to show their true potential. They have two tough away fixtures in February but on current form have every opportunity to continue a welcomed climb up the league.
On the volunteer development front we had 22 Mini and Youth Coaches, Administrators and Volunteers pledge over 3 hours of their time on a cold Monday night completing the RFU’s Play it Safe course, this is a significant commitment towards achieving our accreditation and my thanks to everyone that attended and to Emma Cameron and Vicky Regester for organising and their persistent encouragement.
We also had nine individuals spend 7 hours over two further cold Monday evenings completing the Emergency First Aid in Rugby course and all passed. Again great commitment and support.
This training was compelling enough to launch our fundraising for a Defibrillator at the Club and I am delighted to tell you that through the generosity of members and guests and a fantastic contribution from the Wroxham and Hoveton Lions Club obtained through the efforts of Jimmy Lenihan we now have sufficient funds to commit to the purchase of a Defibrillator through the Community Heartbeat Trust.
As I know many of you appreciate we do rely on some key people to cover some critical roles within the administration of the Club. Some of these are spread too thinly and we would welcome any of you keen to volunteer to support us with open arms. Ideally we would like people to come forward to cover the following roles:- Membership Secretary, Fixture Secretary and House Chairman and if any of you feel you would like to get involved and help support the Club and the Committee for next season please contact myself or Andy Pott our contact details are in the Members Handbook.
I am pleased to be returning to the Club’s Committee in the role of Chairman after a few years absence. Thanks go to Andy Ball for a successful year as past Chairman which followed his 3 very effective years as President what a fantastic commitment to the Club. Thanks also to those committee members that continue to serve the club tirelessly, you know who they are and they deserve our wholehearted support.
Steve Henson and Andy Pott have done a fantastic job in steering us to a position where in working with the UEA, we have the opportunity to deliver a superb facility with a clear and sustainable model for the future development of the club. This proposal received the overwhelming support of the members at the SGM and I look forward to working with Steve and Andy and my fellow committee members in progressing the delivery of our exciting relocation plans assuming the outcome of our planning application is what we expect it to be. We hope to have news on that by the beginning of September.
On the pitch, this season will be a challenge for us as we seek to maintain or even improve our position in the league, having seen the fixture list there will be no easy games however I am sure our coaching team will have prepared the team well .There will be some new players joining us this year, please make them welcome.
Graham Hilton continues another term as President. I endorse the very genuine sentiments of his message and reiterate Andy’s message from last year that whilst we have a great group of volunteers we still need more so please let any of the committee know if you feel you can help.
I also believe that communication is key to ongoing cohesion and success, mine and the Committee’s contact details are all available we will be very happy to hear any concerns, ideas or suggestions you may have throughout the season. If we don’t know what they are we can’t consider or act upon them.
Have a great season.
