I am immensely proud to have been elected President of Norwich Rugby Football Club as it enters its 134th season. For those of you who do not have a clue who I am, I fully intend to spend as much time as possible during the season meeting as many of our members as possible. In the meantime, here’s a brief introduction!
I joined the Club as a player in 1984, following a work move to Norfolk from London. Since hanging up my boots I have fulfilled a variety of roles, including Director of Rugby, Director of Youth Rugby, Chairman, President and Sponsor. I have two sons, both of whom played their junior rugby here, and a daughter, who for several years spent Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings selling Club merchandise from the shop!
Many of the guys I played rugby with here in the early days, and indeed many of those parents who my wife and I met and became friends with during our son's time as players in the Mini & Youth sections, remain good friends today. It’s fair to say that the Club has played a significant part in my life!
I’m very much looking forward to the start of the season, which for a variety of reasons is set up to be a very exciting one. For players in the 1st XV, re-acquainting themselves with local Norfolk rivals Holt, Diss and Wymondham is bound to produce some tough challenges, as all derby games tend to do. Also in the league are our Suffolk neighbours, Southwold, Stowmarket and Ipswich, so there is going to be a real ‘East Anglian’ rivalry present. If you have not been along to see the 1st XV play, I can tell you that win or lose, it’s always an enjoyable day out (although of course it’s a significantly better day out when they win)! If you get the opportunity to do so please come along to support the guys, they really appreciate it. You can also enjoy an incredible pre-match Club lunch and make a day of it!
I’d also like to pay tribute to the outstanding commitment shown by the 2nd & 3rd XV teams. In recent seasons we have managed to retain a good nucleus of players, who are the heart and soul of our Senior Rugby Section. I look forward to sharing a pint or two with them during the season.
Having previously been involved with Mini and Youth rugby at the Club over several years, I realise what a massive commitment parents put in each Sunday to transport their children to games. Whilst they do this primarily for the benefit of their children, both the players and the parents represent Norwich RFC and wear their colours with pride, which is something the Club should be rightly grateful for. These young players and their parents, many of whom fulfill essential administrative roles in their free time, represent the future of Norwich RFC and I will make sure that I get along to as many games as possible.
One of the more welcome developments within our Club is Girls Rugby, which has been successfully nurtured from scratch by a team of committed individuals. It’s pleasing that Women’s Rugby has picked up so much momentum over the past few years and the fact that we’re making such good progress is brilliant news. I’m sure with the team we have in place we will be able to build on this and establish a strong presence.
Over the past couple of months I’ve been spending some time familiarising myself with what’s going on behind the scenes. The Management Committee, under the stewardship of Bob Annable, continues to work very hard to ensure the expectations of our members are met and we should all be aware of the significant levels of personal commitment it takes to make good things happen. One of the key pending issues is obviously the Club Relocation, which is a complicated, time consuming and very stressful process. Although it would be great to move into brand new facilities, first and foremost our commitment must be to make sure that the current and future interests of the Club are protected, which is why we need to ensure that all potential risks are mitigated. I will be supporting them in this process over the coming months and I would urge all our members to exercise a little patience and understanding when it looks like things are not quite going to plan.
Finally, I would like to encourage your support for this season's charity initiative. As the incoming President I have the task of nominating a preferred charity; choosing one over another when there are so many worthwhile causes has been extremely difficult. Having spoken to some of the people involved in MIND (the mental health charity), it’s clear that they do a really difficult job in a world in which there seems to be an increasing demand for their services. This season we plan to run a number of fundraising events, headlined by the Norwich RFC Summer Ball (details to be announced shortly), from which 50% of the net proceeds will be donated to MIND. Please rally around and support this initiative as best you can.
I hope you all have a successful and enjoyable season.
