Match Report

West Norfolk 62 Norwich 22

10/10/2017

West Norfolk 62 Norwich 22

The match was reduced to a 13-a-side game as a third of the Norwich team were absent, including three of their most experienced players, and was reduced to 12-a-side when Norwich players were injured and needed time to recover before retaking the field, as they had no substitutes.

This age group had drawn two matches with West Norfolk last season but with so many players missing a number of those who made it to West Norfolk had to play in unfamiliar positions. Against a big and powerful West Norfolk squad this was more than the Norwich players could cope with but all of them played as hard as they could and were complimented by their opponents’ coach for never giving up.

West Norfolk dominated most of the game and were 33 – 10 up at half time. Norwich came back strongly at the beginning of the second half with 12 unanswered points but as they tired their opponents were able to bring on fresh legs and West Norfolk scored 29 points in the last quarter.

Whilst the disparity in playing strength was an important factor in this heavy defeat the players will know that too many of them failed to complete tackles and that they allowed West Norfolk to take control of the breakdown area on too many occasions.

The coaches will hope for a full squad attendance next Sunday when they entertain Stowmarket and will be working on the breakdown area and tackle completion at their Wednesday night coaching session.
