Match Report

Norwich 34 Crusaders 20

Norwich 34 Crusaders 20

The match was played with a very strong wind blowing across the pitch and in the last few minutes rain made the conditions even more difficult.

This was Norwich’s first 15-a-side game and it was very pleasing to welcome a full side from Crusaders. The Norwich coaches were particularly grateful to Freddy Haddon for playing out of his normal position at fullback in the absence of injured, ill and holidaying players.

Whilst the score was a fair reflection of the game Norwich relied heavily on their fast and powerful midfield backs Monty Snary, Ben Fletcher and Jack Pearson who scored all the team’s tries with Monty converting two of them.

However Crusaders had their own fast and powerful players who broke through weak Norwich defence on four occasions despite the excellent tackling of Bill Pendle and Alex Cotes.  Other players know that they must improve this aspect of their game if the team is not to lose to stronger opposition.

There was a noticeable improvement in the Norwich scrummaging with hooker Charlie Potter taking a number of scrums against the head and losing none from our own put-in thanks to the support and drive he was getting from the rest of the scrum.

Norwich now have a two week break from fixtures but their coaches will hope that as many players as possible attend the Wednesday evening and Sunday morning coaching sessions to prepare for the tough return fixture against West Norfolk on 12th November and the challenging away match at Diss the following week.
