Dereham 1st XV 67 Norwich AXV 7

25/11/2017

Dereham 1st XV 67 Norwich AXV 7

A hard day at the office as the AXV’s winning run comes to an end.
Noriwch 3’s travelled to Dereham to face what was inevitably to be one of the hardest games of the season. The brief was to play the same simple rugby they had been doing to see them through the previous weeks.
But against such a well-drilled side, simple rugby was not so simple. Dereham attacked in strong phases and found their way through early on. Score converted 7-0.

Norwich needed to regather and ensure the home side couldn’t keep their momentum.
And they did exactly that, starting well the AXV kept form and tested the home side with a few drives up field. Play switched around and the away defence was weighed, measured and happily for Norwich, found wanting. B.Tooth at number eight, picked and went off the back of a Norwich dominant scrum wriggling through the home defence and crashing down over the whitewash.

Selfishly, Mr Tooth failed to consider the vast expanse of grass between himself and the posts so the kicker approached the tee with angst but kept his cool and slotted the extra’s despite the difficult angle. 7-7.
Unfortunately from that point Norwich struggled to keep the home side from gathering momentum. A well drilled set of home players strung together phase after phase and injected a physicality that Norwich struggled to match. Tries came in abundance from the home side, much to the dismay of the visitors as despite some strong defence for extended periods of time, the Dereham executed their plays with a military discipline.

With the AXV finding the game hard work at the half it was time for the bench to make an impact. Substitutes came on with an eagerness to amend the deficit and there followed some impressive performances. Special mention to J.Goodrum-Williams who was the first in the second half to carry for Norwich, thirty seconds in. A majestic charge of fifteen metres, beat one defender and then got tackled but still managed a clinical presentation. Play carried on across the pitch and J.GW decided that was quite enough heroics so took a knee and claimed debilitating asthma. A record length of time for the man and an almost unanimous DOD decision.
The second half continued in similar fashion, the near-professional fitness of the home side proving too much for the visitors on several occasions.

Norwich were by no means helpless however, where their defence failed their attack was strong and some sharp runs found them close to scoring their second but the home defence stayed resolute.

Towards the end of the match Norwich resolved to stay solid and just focus on the basics. Play became more patient and clinical but was unfortunately not enough to get any more on the score sheet.

A tough day for the AXV after a run of such great form and pushing their way to top of the league Norwich suffered a heavy defeat of 67-7.

MOM – Brendan Tooth for a great performance both in attack and on the defensive, as well as the only try for Norwich.
DOD – A joint effort from the athlete JGW as well as Craig Poole for reffing rather than playing on a few occasions…
