Match Report

Lowestoft & Yarmouth 17 Norwich 44

Lowestoft & Yarmouth 17 Norwich 44

On a bright yet chilly morning we arrived at Lowestoft and Yarmouth with a squad of 18 players. L and Y struggled for numbers last time we met them, not so this season as they have a group of 21.

Following a L&Y penalty, the ball was worked via Adam to Donat who drew 2 defenders before releasing to Adam who cut a good line to score under the posts. He converted his own try. 0-7.

L&Y played a forwards game and after some strong attacks they scored and convert. 7- 7

N turn over the ball and it ended up with Adam, who ran from just outside the 22 to score to the right of the posts, the conversion was missed. 7 – 12.

N now had an attacking spell, L&Y conceded a series of penalties which helped the N cause. From a scrum, Will R passed to Adam who again weaved through the challengers to score under the posts. Donat converted. 7 – 19.

N then have a poor spell from which L&Y took heart and scored a deserved second try that went unconverted. 12 – 19. The poor spell continued& and again LY punish N, the try goes unconverted. 17 – 19. N are glad when the half time whistle comes so they can regroup.
Half Time   17 – 19

N restarted the match and looked a bit scrappy, Donat was been moved back to 8 and Ethan moved from 8 to 13. The deadlock was broken about 10 minutes in when N full back Tom set off on a strong run and he scored to the left of the posts nearer the flag, no conversion. 17 – 24.

The next try was well worked, from a penalty,  Adam weighted a lovely pass to Ethan who stepped his man to score near the posts, no conversion. 17 – 29.

The introduction of team captain Sam F provided several attacking outlets for the N attack. L&Y conceded a penalty that Sam took quickly. Adam spotted Toby on the overlap and passed to him to score in the corner. No conversion. 17 – 34.

Norwich won a scrum against the head and Sam picked out Adam with a long pass and Adam did the rest. Yet again no conversion. 17 – 39.

N score a final try, after a good break by Harry B, Adam collected his pass and went over to the right of the posts. No conversion. 17 – 44. The game ended shortly afterwards.

L&Y had a game plan to try and use their pack as a spearhead to their attack, they certainly do have some useful large lads in their team. It was heartening to see their numbers have risen whilst so many other clubs are struggling for numbers at this age group. They are well coached and well drilled and no team should take them lightly.

N played well sporadically, we also had spells when we seemed not to gel at all. We started with several players playing out of position as Jon experimented with the squad. Will R did well standing in at 9, Donat fitted in OK as a 13, Miller made a good turnover and presentation of the ball against some much larger opposition.
So with our first win of the season under our belts I think we can all be glad to be off the mark. Jon didn’t do Forward and Back of the match at the game, however here are some candidates. Lochlann tackled extremely well all game against some big forwards, one memorable phase of 3 tackles, one after another stopping the LY momentum. Harry T battled well and Bertie had another good game before coming off injured.

Back wise, Wiktor was vocal and clear headed, Toby and debutant David A supported the attacks well as did Harry B who came on for the closing stages. Adam’s contribution was imperious and Sam played well when he came on for the last 20. Reece made some strong runs from the flanks.
So it’s Felixstowe next weekend at home, let’s hope Bertie, Reece and Harry T all mend quickly. We should have Steele and Callum back next weekend.
Training is important so can we have good numbers on Wednesday please to give Jon and Rob something to work with, as Jon requested on Sunday.

Squad in Number order :  Lochlann, Miller, Ed N, Edward H, Bertie H, Charlie, Reece, Ethan, Will R, Wiktor, Toby, Adam, Donat, David A, Tom, Harry T, Harry B , Sam F.
