Match Report

Norwich 31 Crusaders 10 Norfolk Cup

Norwich 31 Crusaders 10 Norfolk Cup

The Preliminary Round of the Norfolk Youth Cup took place in dry but cool conditions after two postponements in December when the pitches were either waterlogged or frozen.

Whilst the score flattered Norwich their fast and powerful midfield backs Monty Snary, Ben Fletcher and Jack Pearson, very ably supported by open side flanker Tom Bevan, were too strong for their opponents.

However Crusaders had their own fast and powerful players who broke through the Norwich defence on two occasions despite the excellent tackling of Bill Pendle, Alex Cotes and Tom Bevan.  However most of the other players have also improved their defence and were not intimidated by the physical presence of the Crusaders players.

The coaches were particularly impressed by the debut at scrum half of Kye Youngs playing a full match in that position for the first time. He demonstrated his growing understanding of the game by choosing the right options in attack and harried Crusaders from every scrum and breakdown when they secured the ball.

The coaches were also pleased by the quality of the rugby produced and there were some excellent moves orchestrated by Archie Gibbs at Number 8 when the scrum was struggling against their bigger and more physical opponents.

Monty Snary scored three tries, two in his normal position of fly-half and one where he came through the middle of a breakdown (not exactly sure why he was there) and got the touchdown. Tom Bevan scored two tries when linking with the midfield backs and Monty Snary converted three of the tries.

This is a team that is building its skills and understanding of the game every time it takes to the pitch.
Having secured their place in the Norfolk Youth Cup, rather than the Plate, the team now have a playing record that is identical to that of the Club’s 1st XV, who reckon they are having a good season. However to maintain it they will have to continue to improve as only the winners of the Preliminary Round progress into the Cup round robin so they will be up against the best teams in the county.

It was also a great pleasure to see young referee, Freddie Wetherell, control the game so well.
Season’s performance to date. Played 13. Won 9. Lost 4.
