Match Report

Felixstowe 5 Norwich 39

Felixstowe 5 Norwich 39

On a very cold, windy but sunny morning Norwich travelled the not inconsiderable distance to Felixstowe. We arrived with 16 players whilst they only have 14 so we agree to play a 14 a side game.

On a sticky pitch the game is largely played out as a forwards game for the first 20 minutes or so.
The Norwich forwards look committed and focused, getting to any breakdown at a good pace. Norwich had a few chances with breaks coming largely from Flanker Reece Brown. Felixstowe had one good looking break in the opening period only for it to snuffed out by a great low tackle from Charlie D-J.

Norwich scored by pressing Felixstowe back over their try line and from a series of sloppy passing Harry Busby touched down a loose ball. No Conv. 0 – 5

Norwich started to apply more pressure and from a Norwich scrum some pre-planning saw Tom Glover make a dummy run, creating a clear gap for Viktor Markowski to feint a pass and simply run through to score. Clever Try. 0 – 10. No Conversion.Following a Norwich clearance kick that didn’t make touch, Felixstowe played the ball down their back line to score near the posts. No Conv.  5 – 10.

Buoyed by their try, for the last few minutes of the half the hosts tested Norwich's resolve. Norwich  defended well and after Felixstowe conceded a penalty, the ball was given to Tom Glover, he was tackled, Donat picked up and played in Reece Brown who went over near the posts. Reece converted his own try. 5 – 17.
Half Time

Felixstowe drop to 13 players and so Norwich also obliged.  Good interplay between the forwards and backs resulted in Reece Brown scoring his second try. No Conv. 5- 22

Norwich seemed to have the upper hand now and a ball won by the forwards was passed to the hard working Ethan Hooper. He made a telling run before skilfully offloading to Harry Busby who evaded 2 players and backed himself to score, running in under the posts. Donat Fistrek converts.  5 – 29

Viktor scored next after a swift step he evaded challengers to score. No Conv. 5 – 34.

Team Captain Samuel Furness scored the last try after picking and going himself from a scrum, his determination saw him jinking and weaving through the assembled defence for him to score with the support of the impressive Callum Davidson.  5 – 39.

Game Ends.

Norwich played well today, the last time we played Felixstowe was 2 years ago and we won 5 tries to 1 at a tournament in Diss.
Two years on we didn’t know what to expect, we were without our best strike player however we still gained a positive result. You all had to up your game today and you did.
As the Felixstowe coach pointed out it could have gone either way in the first 20 minutes but you lads, as a team, didn’t let that happen.

At half time the game wasn’t won and we needed that grit that we have built up through the years to see this game over the line. Well done to all.

Overall we won today as we played as a team, you talked, you thought and by doing this you won. We need to take the strength of this into next weekend’s cup game against North Walsham. A victory here against them and a victory away in a few weeks will see us at The big Rugby Weekend at the end of the season. That was a great feeling, seeing yourselves on Mustard TV.

The players who shone for me as Match Reporter were Charlie, Reece, Sam, Ethan, Callum, Loch, Tom.  However without the others we wouldn’t be what we are. A Band of Brothers.
