Romford & Gidea Park 25 Norwich 54

Romford & Gidea Park 25 Norwich 54

Norwich got back to winning ways with a victory over Romford & Gidea Park although the scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors who were made to work hard for it against a determined home side.

The first 20 minutes found both sides shaking off the ring-rust of a week of inactivity, as many errors, mostly in the contact area, ensured an even distribution of play but no score.

Norwich opened the scoring with a drive from the forwards that resulted in a try for Jack Walsh.
Shortly after this, Norwich lost lock Nathan Wilson to hospital with a shoulder injury and Josh Wilson joined the fray. Three minutes later Walsh made a break down the centre of the field, and passed to hooker Phil Buckley who sprinted 25 metres to the line scoring beneath the posts. Theo Elliott added the conversion and Norwich eased ahead 0-12.

Five minutes later Norwich added another converted try, this time by Tom Stanley to take the score to 0-19.
However, Romford had no intention of letting the game slip away from them and two minutes later scored an unconverted try wide out on the left. Four minutes later a penalty from a scrum infringement was kicked by Teddy Duke which took the score to 8-19 at half time.

Romford looked dangerous all afternoon on the counter attack, moving the ball well across a well organised back line and the second half started poorly for Norwich when they conceded a try in the left hand corner from just such a passage of open flowing rugby.

Norwich hit back four minutes later after a breakthrough by the Austin brothers, Laurence and Nick, drawing the defenders and popping a pass to Chris Parrot to score under the posts which was converted and followed up shortly afterwards with a second try for Tom Stanley. Score 13-33.

Norwich continued to dominate the play and six minutes later Tristan Smith outstripped the Romford defence after a break by Chris Parrott which Elliot converted. Just one minute later Laurence Austin made a searing break from the kick off, off-loaded to Matt Selby who,  unselfishly, put Josh Wilson in the clear to score a converted try between the posts. Score 13-47.

Norwich then assisted their opponents by conceding two yellow cards within six minutes for technical offences, the second after Romford had scored an unconverted try.

With 15 players against 13, Romford scored again four minutes later taking the score to 25-47 and giving them a try bonus point.
A minute before full time Laurence Austin, now playing in his normal back row position stormed through the tired Romford defence to complete the scoring at 25 – 54.

It was a satisfying bonus point win for Norwich which cements their position in fourth place in the league.
