Norwich Combined sides v Bury U16
On a damp morning , punctuated by light rain, the combined age groups of Norwich including the U15 16's & 17s made a large squad of 27, Bury bought 17 players.
The kick off has been put back to 11.30 to allow our clubhouse to clear as there was a very large Mini’s gathering going on.
Bury got the game under way and scored out wide after about a minute. No Conversion. 0-5.
There was then a 20 minute spell in which Norwich did well to contain them. Bury were quickly up on every ball, clever at the breakdown and just basically well orgnanised. The Norwich forwards did their very best to contain a side that wanted to use their obvious strengths in the backs.
Norwich held Bury's attack and had a few chances of their own in attack, however this well drilled side could tackle too.
When Bury tried to play their natural way they were often thwarted by some great tackling from the Norwich backs. Bury deployed a new tactic , realising their frustration at having all the ball and not scoring. They started to pull Norwich from left to right and back again, this left gaps and one was exploited out wide. No Conv. 0 – 10.
In the last 10 of the 35 minute half Norwich conceded quickly again from a turnover an exceptionally rapid small winger set off , hugging the line , he beat the full back hands down and turned to score under the posts. Try converted . 0 – 17.
Two more tries followed , the first of them a master class in free flowing rugby , converted, the second a good run and flag post touch down .
Half time. 0 – 29
Norwich hadn’t given up all hope at this point however they realised they were against a very good team.
Early in the second half , the Bury number 2 , was fed the ball by the 9 and he smashed through 2 defenders , outpaced the retreating defence to score out to the left of the posts. No conv. 0 – 34.
As in the first half Norwich frustrated Bury for 10 to 12 minutes. The next try came from an intercepted pass, with the Bury 12 doing the damage , scoring under the posts . Try converted. 0 – 41.
Norwich concede 2 more tries , 1 converted to take the score to 0 – 53.
Norwich made wholesale changes bringing on the raft of U16/U15 subs and as good as they were we conceded once again , an unconverted try. 0-58.
Norwich were outclassed. However all of the Norwich team did two things well, they stuck at it, always looking for a chance to break and score and on the other hand defending well against a very very good side.
Bury are a well drilled group of players who went home worthy victors.
Thanks to Bury RFC, to the referee, who had a good game in a charged competitive fixture, as they are at this age group.
Thanks to Jenny and the kitchen ladies , to Sarah and Amanda and to the Mums who helped serve the players after the game.
