Sothwold 76 Norwich 17 - Mixed age group training game
Southwold V Norwich Under 16/17/18 Training Game
This was originally 2 fixtures , a Colt’s game and an Under 16 one but neither set of sides had enough players for the 2 games to take place so it was decided to have 1 game over 3 age groups.
The weather in Norwich was a little misty but the early morning sun was doing its job in clearing it, in Southwold we found a heavy fog . This had lifted just sufficiently for the 12.30 kick off.
Southwold kicked off and set off at a cracking pace, Norwich couldn’t contain them, and a sloppy pass was intercepted and scored under the posts. 7 – 0. A Southwold penalty saw them kick deep into the Norwich half. Norwich were turned over and Southwold scored under the posts again. 14 – 0.
The hosts were quicker to everything, and well drilled. They scored 4 more tries , 3 converted to leave Norwich staring down the barrel at 40 – 0. Norwich made a tactical change , moving Full back Tom Glover from 15 to 7 as a flanker , Patryk going to Full back.
Tom’s aggressive ball carrying and tackling meant more Southwold forwards were drawn in, to contain him. From a pop off by Tom, the ball ended in the hands of Joe Vincent who scored near the posts. The drop kick went wide. 40 – 5
From a tap penalty Norwich attacked again down the right hand side . Ball carrier Joe Vincent kicked a grubber through, intending to run onto it, his path is blocked. N 9, Sam Furness touched the ball down after it crossed the line. Yet again no kicking tee meant no conversion. 40 – 10
Southwold seemed in a bit of disarray in the last 7 minutes or so of the first half and they started the second in a similar fashion. A series of penalties for high tackles, offside and handling errors , see Norwich besiege their try line. Credit to Southwold as it took 4 penalties for Norwich to finally cross the line with Hugo going over to the left. With a kicking tee, Patryk converted. 40 – 17.
The next 10 minutes saw Norwich in the ascendancy however far too often ball handling and poor passing slowed the Norwich momentum. Southwold brought their older players back on (rolling subs ) , N brought on their U16 subs and the game swings Southwold’s way once again.
A good few or more of these lads play for Southwold 2’s , and the extra 2 years tell. Norwich were punished as Southwold scored 6 more tries, 3 converted to take the final score to 76 – 17.
It was the end of the road for some players on both sides , with the older lads either moving to Jobs or senior rugby. In Norwich’s case we say goodbye to Tom Bibby, Harvey Pyer, Harry Soames, Joe Vincent and Josh Laskey. All the very best for your future endeavours .
We still have 2 hard fixtures and a 7’s tournament to go to. Holt , at home Sunday, which is an under 16/17 thing. Then North Walsham Away, same discipline , U16/17.
We end up in Ipswich in 3 weeks time at a keenly contested 7’s tournament , with a squad of hopefully 20 , including the U18 players.
Shortly after the season ends we start light training, I know Jon and Vinny are excited about the prospect of next year and so they should be. Players are getting on and we have some very committed lads as well.
