Beccles/N Wal/Wym training games

Beccles/N Wal/Wym training games

A lovely September morning saw the U14’s travel to Beccles for some short training games with Beccles RFC, Swaffham RFC and North Walsham RFC. This would be a good opportunity to get used to the new laws for this age group; namely the uncontested lineout and 8 man scrum, and to blow away the cobwebs.

After a warm up and some lineout practice we started the training game against Swaffham who settled into the game much quicker than Norwich. The game finished a draw but rather surprisingly Norwich struggled in the Scrum losing several against the head.

The breakdown at the ruck was also very hit and miss but did improve as the game progressed. Highlight of this game was Alfie finishing a very good try where the ball was moved through the hands of the backs and he touched down on the corner.

After a short break we were then up against Beccles RFC who have improved over the last 12 months. The first half was very tight and we changed ends one try a piece. The boys were still struggling at scrum time and the breakdown was still a problem as we couldn’t keep the ball. So overall they did well to keep it level. The highlight of the game from a Norwich perspective was Elijah using his initiative and taking a quick tap and go from a penalty and scoring under the posts.

The 2nd half Norwich were under more pressure and the breakdown continued to be a problem. Beccles were worthy winners.
Lastly we played a very short 15 minute game against Nth Walsham where Norwich had opportunities to score but poor decision making meant we didn’t quite finish it. Positives in the game was Alfie and for his tackling effort and Conor for his positive runs. The game ended as a draw.

Lots to work on but a worthwhile run out where we know there are two areas we must rectify immediately in training – Scrum and breakdown.
Boys – Keep coming to training and work hard and we will improve these areas.

Finally thanks to Gary Spinks for stepping up refereeing his first game and to Kirk for producing the great photos.
