Norwich AXV 5 Diss 3's 46

Norwich AXV 5 Diss 3's 46

After a good pre-season with plenty of prep, Norwich 3s hosted their Diss counterparts to kick off their league campaign. The kicker had clearly spent the summer practicing as the first boot hung delightfully in the sky for such a length of time that the chasers were able to set up camp and wait out the winter before the ball came down.

As expected Diss brought a huge challenge and from the start were a physical side. Norwich had to work hard to keep them at bay and spent a great deal of the opening minutes on the back foot.

Rumours from the commentary box were that DOD has been decided early after J.Canning saw yellow in the first minute and the AXV went down a man. The commentary box was politely reminded that it's a team game and there were still fourteen contenders for that title...

Diss managed a swift couple of tries to get an early lead but the AXV were not phased and battled on, despite the man deficit. After conceding thrice the home side rallied and began shutting down attacks, much to the delight of the concerned home fans.

After an initially leaky start The AXV kept solid for the remainder of the first half, though unfortunately did not manage to score points of their own. 0-17.

The second half showed the real strength of the visiting side as they ran in a hefty count of tries. Credit to Norwich, their defence held firm in the middle, the earlier leak had been plugged and next to nothing seeped through. It was only by going wide that Diss could score and where the AXV fell short was their drift.

The highlight of the Norwich attacking game was a dramatic jaunt down the wing from S Walpole who, received the ball and once he saw he was clear coasted towards the line. Little did he realise that he was not clear and that the Diss fullback was hot on his tail. A quick panic and a pump of the legs and he was away again, crossing the line in the corner to score the AXV's only try. The kicker decided he wanted to attempt the world longest conversion and sadly his boot fell short.

Game ends 5-46.

Fitness and communication will need to improve to counter occasions like these and as a side new to the league, this was not a bad showing overall. Plenty of positives to take, onwards to next week.

MOM: Darren Crittenden for a huge work rate and a crazy showing of raw power throughout.

DOD: Jake Canning for a card so early in the game most people were still getting their kit on on the changing rooms.
