Holt Colts 15 Norwich Colts 17

Holt Colts 15 Norwich Colts 17

Norwich welcomed back 2 returning older age Colts , Joe Byram and Henry Covier however they were without the influential Adam Huggins.

There is a bit of history behind this fixture. When the two teams shared a joint tour to Northampton at the under 13’s age group, a small and insignificant cup was lifted by one of the parents from the hosting club.
It was decided that this cup would become the ON’S  cup and the two sides would play for it at every ongoing fixture. The cup was handed to Norwich who promptly lost it at the first chance of asking.

Holt have retained the cup ever since, with Norwich being on the end of some heavy defeats. Today the sides looked more evenly matched.

After a well observed 2 minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday, Holt camped in the Norwich half but good defensive work , particularly by the forwards, kept Holt in check. Finally after about 20 minutes Holt broke the Norwich line to score out wide. No conversion. 5 – 0.

Norwich upped their intensity. Good tackling by Will Roxby stopped Holt exposing the flanks. Norwich moved the ball from right to left at speed and Hugo Vati went over half way out. No conversion. 5- 5.

Half Time

The second half began in the same fiercely but fairly contested way.  From a dominant Norwich scrum, Patryk made good ground, offloading at the crucial moment to Harry Busby who went over out wide but cut back in to land under the posts. Callum Davison converted. 5- 12 .

Holt make several changes, mainly in the pack and these paid dividends within minutes.  From a penalty , Holt kicked deep into Norwich territory . The resulting lineout saw Holt hold possession and drive over the try line to score out wide. No Conv. 10 – 12.

Another even 10 minutes followed, until Callum Davison intercepted a loose pass and ran towards the posts, he was finally stopped a few yards out. The Norwich forwards arrived early to secure the ball and Holt conceded a series of quick penalties. Norwich’s tap and go policy finally paid off with the hard working Prop , Lochlann Surridge diving over. No conversion . 10 – 17.

Norwich conceded a penalty late on,  Holt kicked long and secured the line out. Norwich held them out before another penalty to Holt saw them finally touchdown out wide again.

With the score at 15- 17 , N With Norwich hearts in mouths, the conversion was missed and the final whistle blow. Norwich regained the ONS cup.

Holt, the county champions for the last 2 seasons were under strength , but they didn’t play on this as the reason for their defeat.
Nor did N over enthuse the win, both teams sitting after the game for a nice meal and a great rousing speech from Holt’s coach , Peter D,Amerry.
Holt and Norwich , at this age group, has always been a competitive but friendly fixture, today never more so. This was youth rugby very best. This is the reason Lads play rugby , parents commit and coaches give up their valuable time. Long may this spirit continue.
Thanks to Holt for the game , the right spirit , the meal and the camaraderie .
