U13's at the Holt Festival

U13's at the Holt Festival

Norwich U13s played their first competitive matches since the last round of the U13s cup back in early November on a rather cold and grey afternoon in North Norfolk. Hosted by Holt RFC the second round saw Norwich paired with Beccles, Crusaders and West Norfolk in the second tier of the competition in three 20 minute matches.

We travelled with a threadbare squad of 14 boys and first up were Beccles who were able to draw on a large squad of around 18 boys. The opening exchanges were very even but eventually Beccles superiority showed through and despite some heroic defence by Norwich, Beccles opened the scoring. With much of the game being playing in our half it was inevitable that we would concede again and the opposition ran in three further tries to win the game without reply.
FT: Beccles 20 Norwich 0

Next up were Crusaders who are a very strong physical side and tough opposition in this age group. Norwich stuck at it and there was no lack of commitment but Crusaders were too strong and won the game 35-0. Buddy Kidd came close to scoring a consolation try for Norwich with a superb run but was tacked within a few metres from the try line and our backs couldn’t capitalise on the loose ball.

Unfortunately Norwich lost experienced back Louis Fraser with a nasty ankle injury, speedy recovery Louis.
FT: Crusaders 35 Norwich 0

Finally we faced West Norfolk, a team traditionally strong in the age group. West were depleted a bit and seeing this as an opportunity to record a win Norwich went into this game hopeful of finishing the day on a high note.

It would have been easy for the boys to go into this game demoralised but we managed to pick them up in the break and urge them to come way from the day with something to show for all their hard work, and the work we have done in training.

They responded brilliantly playing some excellent rugby and ran in six tries without reply, some of the passing rugby was superb with one try moving all the way through the backs hands, exactly what we have been urging them to do. A really pleasing performance all round.
FT: Norwich 30 West Norfolk 0
Tries:Rueben Smy, Buddy Kidd, Eddie Hume (2), Freddie Rawlings (2).

It was great to see the boys reaction at the end to what is essentially a first win for this emerging team and if we can build on this experience we can hopefully push on from here.

Player of the tournament for me would have to be Freddie Rawlings, who was superb throughout and for me to say that as his dad he must have been   good as I am very reluctant to praise my own son as coach!
