Norwich 5 Beccles 40

Norwich 5 Beccles 40

Norwich U13s were scheduled to play Lowestoft & Yarmouth but as they no longer have a team in this age group we invited Beccles to join us for a friendly.

We have played Beccles twice already this season in the County Cup with a draw and a loss to date, so we knew we would be in for a tough morning.

With a 9am pitch inspection due to the sub zero temperatures overnight the 3rd pitch was declared fit and it was game on. Norwich had the best of the early exchanges and Beccles were pinned in their own half for the first 5-10 minutes, until a breakaway try by the visitors broke the deadlock.

Norwich let this get to their heads a bit and quickly conceded again, and they could do nothing about the strong running and passing of the Beccles backs who ended the half 25-0 to the good.

The second half saw some changes and experienced forwards James Coates and George Applegate joined the fray and Norwich proved to be more competitive this half. Despite conceding three more tries they battled hard and debutant James Phillips converted a try to lift the spirits of the home side and that was no more than they deserved for their efforts.

Some positives to take from the game are that we tackled very well but our rucking was poor and our defensive line was non-existent at times, so these things need to be rectified by the coaches if we are going to become competitive and harder to beat.

But the effort by the boys was second to none and they didn’t let their heads drop despite the result so massive respect for them for that.

Man of the match went to Tommy Hill for some tireless tackling and running and thanks to Craig Poole for stepping in to ref.
