Beccles 68 Norwich 12

Beccles 68 Norwich 12

A slightly delayed start time today saw Norwich U14’s travel to Beccles arriving in plenty of time for a 12:00hrs kick off.
We were met by clear blue skies and glorious sunshine with no hint of rain, the temperature was bearable and everyone looked forward to a testing mornings rugby.

The boys warmed up with some preliminary routines and were then put through their paces by the coaches.
As always we have come to expect a well-drilled and motivated Beccles side but it was hoped that our boys would be able to contend with the pressure, which Beccles would inevitably put them under.

With Beccles winning the ‘competition for possession’ Beccles elected to receive the ball and the game commenced.

The first 5-10 minutes kind of defined how the game would ultimately be played by both sides; Beccles came out of the blocks fast and hard and caught Norwich napping on two occasions both of which ended with tries which were both converted by their kicker.
However Norwich rallied and with a very dominant scrum managed to pull back two tries themselves. The first coming from a dominant possession in the middle of the field and the ball being moved out to the wing through Ollie M who ran well with the ball and at the ideal time off loaded to Jack who was able to use his pace and score under the posts. Tom converted the try and it looked like the boys were starting to believe in themselves.

With this try Norwich came back at Beccles and showed the sort of rugby which we had all come to admire from our boys. Some more dominant work by the forwards in the middle of the pitch allowed Jack to once again make a surging run through the Beccles pack and score another good try for Norwich.

Beccles came back at Norwich and started to move the ball quickly and precisely around the pitch that caught Norwich on the hop and allowed Beccles to score two further tries before halftime, both of which were converted.
At halftime the score was Beccles 28 – Norwich 12.
Unfortunately the second half was dominated by a well-drilled and confident Beccles side that, other than at the scrum, controlled the game. Norwich was unable to find the motivation, which had seen them turn the Beccles defence over in the first half. It is fair to say that there were times during the second half when Norwich’s appetite for the game was found wanting, and this was reflected by Beccles scoring a further six tries, with the final try coming on the full time whistle.

The final score being Beccles 68 – Norwich 12.
A disappointing result for our boys who although fought hard for some of the game, just didn’t look as if they were really up for it today and unfortunately were not able to pick themselves up when their heads dropped.
Hopefully we will take away some important learning particularly around tackling, self-belief and having the will to dig deep even when it looks hopeless.

Keep at it boys we all know you have the ability to compete at the top level, don’t let today dwell on your minds, move forward and do what you do best, playing good strong competitive rugby.
Our Man of the Match today was Conor, well-done Conor keep up the good work.
