Norwich v Southwold report

Norwich v Southwold report

Norwich U13s hosted Southwold on an unseasonably mild February morning.

A good showing of 17 Norwich boys were up for selection - fantastic considering we were averaging around 8 boys at training in September.

But numbers don't count for everything and for the first 15 minutes of the ‘match’ Southwold were superior in every department running in a number of tries without reply.

We had been working in training on our defensive line, and to the boys credit it was better than our last outing, but we were simply second best in the ruck and our tackling against the strong running and physically imposing Southwold back line was non existent at times. To be fair bringing down a 6ft tall 13 year old in full flight is not easy!

Both coaches agreed to call a halt after 15 minutes and mix the teams up to create a more even contest and we all tried to lift our boys shattered spirits.

This had the desired effect as the Norwich boys came to life, and once the shackles of impending defeat had been lifted they all got stuck in and made their mark. Tommy Hill caught the eye once again and he took the MOTM award for his fearless tackling and both Freddie Rawlings and Eddie Hume scored tries to lift the Norwich gloom!

Huge thanks goes to Nick and Matt the Southwold coaches who did everything to encourage our boys and I have to say Southwold in general were class. They have invited us down to the coast for a joint session which we will take up later in the season fixtures permitting.

Onwards to Stowmarket at home next Sunday - the learning curve continues!
