Match Report

Cantabrigian 2's 45 Norwich Lions 38

Cantabrigian 2's 45 Norwich Lions 38

The Lions travelled to Cantabs with a bare 15. I must big up Matt Cole-Wilkin and Charley Matthews who were both intending on joining a stag party for this Saturday but showed their devotion to the club by changing their plans as they did not want the Lions travelling light. Thank you both very much. It was great to see Richie Ruddock back playing after injury.

As it turned out they both played in a very entertaining game to watch for those of us lucky enough to be there.

The bus was late. The Scottish coach was frustrated (Is this like 'he who must not be named'?- Ed). The pre-match routine was short and did not instill confidence. The game kicked off and within ten minutes the Lions were down 14-0. The Scotsman vented and asked for some direct handling rugby. The Lions reacted. 14-5. 14-10. As I wasn't expecting to write a match report I did not make a note of the scorers. But you know who you are!!

This game ebbed and flowed for both sides. Norwich had a functional lineout. The scrums after 15 mins settled down with some better positioning and technique. Norwich's only achilles heel was from any restart they fumbled the catch, costing them three quick tries. Norwich went down to 14 men after 15 mins when Golebiowski  got hurt in a head on tackle.  Cantabs scored again. 21-10. Norwich scored 21-17. Cantabs scored 26-17. Norwich scored. 26-23.

Half time. Chat was good. Still playing with 14.  Cantabs kick off and scored almost immediately. 32-23. Norwich responded 32- 30. Everyone put in such a good shift. My eyes were drawn to Charlie Orton, Little Bailey, Tom Stanley, Hayden Francis and Stuart Seppings. Norwich's line speed was good in defence, but were missing a few too many first time tackles. When Norwich had the ball in hand they also made good ground. Charlie Jefferies was ever present playing beyond his years.

Cantabs got a penalty 35-30. Norwich got a penalty 35-33. Cantabs scored 40-33. Norwich scored 40 -38. Norwich then lost Charlie Jefferies with an ankle injury. 10 minutes to go. Patryk Golebiowski came back on having appreciated his rest. Norwich were awarded a penalty within kickable distance, however opted to take an uncontested scrum. This did not result in a score, however were awarded another penalty 25 meters from the line and 20 meters to the right. Norwich opted to kick. Missed. Norwich pressed and pressed but Cantabs defence held firm.

Cantabs were not finished and had a final flurry to score the killer blow. They missed the conversion which made the score 45-38. This resulted in Norwich getting a much deserved losing bonus on top of a four try bonus point.

Fantastic shift put in by everyone.
