Norwich 15 Beccles 10

Norwich 15 Beccles 10

Norwich U13s hosted Beccles on a very wet early spring day and, with this being the only home fixture of the day we were able to take advantage of the first team pitch for once! The last time we played Beccles in February they ran in 8 tries in a 40-5 defeat, something we were hoping would not happen again.

With a total of 7 players unavailable due to holidays and illness we were once again down to the bare bones with only 11 boys available. Beccles, who we have an excellent relationship with, loaned us 2 players and we agreed to play three 15 minute sections and review the game at the intervals, if the teams were too uneven we planned to mix things up.

The first third started and Norwich were quickly on the offensive and eventually scored when Tommy Hill ran in a try down the right. Norwich were soon down to 10 players when Louis Fraser took a boot in the face which sadly ended his morning. Beccles levelled with a try before the break for a 5-5 scoreline, a very entertaining and even game was now being played out.

The second 15 ended as it started - 5 all with nothing to choose between the sides, sterling defensive work from both teams ensured a stalemate.

The game opened up in the final third, Norwich edging ahead, Tommy Hill once again converting. Freddie Rawlings then put some daylight between the two sides to make the score 15-5. Beccles reduced the deficit with a minute or so to go - but Norwich held on for what is our first victory this season outside tournaments, a big morale boost for the boys!

Player of the match went to front row Jakob Little, but all the boys deserve massive credit for a superb all-round performance. Particularly pleasing was the defence - and the boys line speed was excellent, something we have been working on a lot in training.
