Halstead Templars 15 Norwich Lions 27

Halstead Templars 15 Norwich Lions 27

The Lions travelled to Halstead Templars, who they had beaten comfortably at home earlier in the year. Conditions were variable with hail, strong winds and the occasional spell of sunshine.

After a positive warm up the Lions had yet another poor start with Halstead getting the first points on the board scoring out wide. The first half was full of errors with the Lions constantly conceding penalties at the break down. Rare moments of brilliance were shown by Cameron Horide, Rudyard Gant and Mo Chisholm but unnecessary offloads crippled our attacking platform.

We did finally get on the board thanks to a trademark pick from the scrum by Mo, bundling over taking three or four Halstead players with him. That was the highlight of an extremely frustrating half ending at 5-5. After a well-deserved b*llocking by Stewart Cameron at half time, the team did seem to rally, but this was short lived as the errors crept in once again, eventually leading to a Halstead try on the right wing. As with every Lions game this year it seems that 10 points must be conceded before they wake up, thankfully we did!

Rudyard Gant punched huge holes in Halstead’s defence with support popping up which simply wasn’t there in the first half. Using this platform Ethan Hooper scored two tries in quick succession to relieve the pressure. Following the example set by young Ethan, who showed great finishing ability, the Lions grew in confidence.

MCW scored a further two tries to put the game beyond Halstead, the second a real peach beating the winger and ghosting past the fullback. Rob Hickford added one conversion and the game seemed fully in our control. However a disastrous tap penalty in our half was poorly executed which led to a turnover followed by a hack through which Halstead chased and dotted down.

15-27 final score, a poor end to the game but great resilience was shown to come back in the second half to win. MoM – Rudyard Gant for running the most yards gained possibly ever, if only he could pass. DotD – Rudyard Gant for the most pathetic flop after taking a quick tap which led to conceding the last try. It was an absolute pleasure to captain the Lions for the last 8 games and I must thank Stewart Cameron who has been the heart and soul of this Lions team.
