Norwich 50 Diss 20

30/09/2019

Norwich 50 Diss 20

This was the first home fixture of the season for the Norwich U15 boys and the weather was more normal for the time of year – wet and windy but the boys were keen to play on a soft ground again!

Diss RFC U15s just had 8 players so with the 21 Norwich boys we arranged a game of 14 a side with 1 sub.
The Diss team has unfortunately lost a lot players this season and the 8 players who travelled to Norwich were also quite inexperienced. We tried to even up the teams especially in key positions to make the game competitive.

From kick off the all Norwich side dominated possession and territory. The speed to the breakdown was generally pretty good which is something we have been working on and it was nice to see them put it into practice. Diss kept working hard throughout the first half but Norwich continued to dominate most of the breakdowns which quite often led to further tries.

We continued to rotate Norwich boys into the Diss side all of whom worked really hard. It was pleasing to see that the scores were coming from different areas of the pitch with both forwards and backs scoring. In the 2nd half we further rotated the Norwich boys playing in the blue shirt. We decided to move some of the more experienced Norwich players to see if that evened up the two sides. To start with Norwich continued where they left off dominating the tackle area however as the 2nd half continued Diss started to find more space especially in the wider channels. The ball was moved a couple of times to the Diss winger who managed to score twice in the corner. Further tries from Diss came albeit they were actually Norwich players!

This was a good training fixture and it allowed the coaches to try out players in different positions. The forward of the day went to Oliver Youngs who only started with us in the summer. Playing flanker he made some great tackles and is now making good progress in the ruck. Back of the day was Oliver Maguire who made good ground out on the wing and was good in defence. Special mention goes to Joseph Govier who scored a well worked try.

I would like to wish Diss U15s well for the season and I hope they rebuild their squad. It’s sad to see rugby teams lose players to other clubs however it does seem to happen more often now. Good luck for the rest of the season.

David
