Crusaders 48 Norwich 8

Crusaders 48 Norwich 8

Cup action sees the AXV fall at the first hurdle.

The AXV began a tough day out at Crusaders with an excellent first ten minutes. Heavy carries and strong runs from the Norwich pack meant the home twenty-two was under relentless attack. Crusaders held fast and their wealth of experience saw them turn possession over and a runner break away to score a try against the run of play. Unconverted, 5-0.

Norwich resumed play and continued strong, forcing errors and working their way back to the opposition 22. A penalty against the home side meant Norwich could put points on the board and the kicker did just that. 5-3.

From there, the well-drilled Crusaders side began to run riot, their experience showing with many unanswered tries and a strong defensive performance for the remainder of the half.

The second half started miserably for Norwich, sustaining injuries in the opening few, as well as conceding more points. A call for pride was issued and the consensus was that an increase in work rate was needed. The final twenty of the game seemed to take a turn, with Norwich suddenly causing the home side problems.

A rhythmic series of pick-and-go carries saw the visitors close to scoring on many occasions and the general feel was far more positive.

The visitors nearly saw themselves in at the corner after a few forward carries put Norwich within five metres, the ball was then shipped out to the winger who, with no one in front of him and only a few metres to cover… Knocked the ball forward. A taxi was called and he was sent home in disgrace.

Norwich did score shortly after, however on the opposite side of the pitch, as a carbon copy of the previous attempt saw young winger Steele Keeble in for his first AXV try. Conversion sadly missed, 48-8.

The AXV have plenty of positives to take from the latter stages of the game and more than enough points to improve upon. A bitter pill as the AXV are now out of the cup, but the focus is now firmly on league rugby.

MOM: Steele Keeble

DOD: Henrique Dias, a very naughty boy.
