Norwich Union 50 Norwich Lions 14

Norwich Union 50 Norwich Lions 14

A surprisingly warm day, for the time of the year, saw Norwich travel the short distance to top of the table Norwich Union. Norwich kicked off and both teams tested each other in the opening period. Influential flanker Stu Seppings came off after 10 minutes with a knock to the head and Norwich reshuffled to accommodate the arrival of Simon Elvin.

Union conceded a few penalties that saw Norwich camped on or around the 5 metre line. However they just couldn’t find a way through. Finally, Union got a clearance kick to touch. They stole the ball at the lineout and cut some decent lines through the Norwich defence to score under the posts and convert. 7 – 0.

Straight from the restart Union again unlocked the Norwich defence and were destined to score again, save for a superb covering tackle from Sam Furness. Norwich conceded 2 more converted tries before the break. Norwich had 2 more decent forward led attacks in the half however they bore no fruit. If lady luck had smiled it could have been 3 tries apiece at the break. However credit must be paid to the Union defence who kept a clean slate. 21 – 0.
Half Time

Whilst Norwich started the second half brightly, it was the Union that scored 2 more tries, 1 converted after the Norwich spell had ended. 33- 0.

To Norwich’s credit they kept going and ended up camped on the Union try line. The ball moving slowly from the right to the left of the field, Norwich finally score when scrum half, Sam Furness spotted a gap and took the ball from the 8, Michael Barber and dived over. Rob Hickford converted. 33 – 7.

However, the Union struck back with 2 more converted tries taking the score to 45 – 7.
A final Norwich flurry saw Rudyard Herbert Okey break the line, handing off 3 defenders, he went over out wide before cutting back inside to score under the posts. Rob Hickford converted. 45 – 14.

Norwich Union had the last word with a try gifted by a deflection off the posts. No conversion. 50 – 14
This was a much better team performance from Norwich than in the home game earlier in the season. Norwich Union are well coached and drilled hence why they are top of this league, and clearly here today the better side won.

Norwich certainly gave them a game though with Coach, Charlie Maskell, rallying his troops throughout the game. Well done to Norwich Union who it seems are destined for higher level ruby next season. Thanks go to their staff and helpers for the meal and to the referee for an enjoyable game.
