Norwich Lions V Cambridge 3’s

Norwich Lions V Cambridge 3’s

On the eve of storm Dennis, Norwich were unaware of the menace Cambridge would present. Cambridge kicked off and then defend the early Norwich attacks. Both sides are nervy at first but it was Cambridge that settled into their game plan shortly after the start.

With Cambridge dominating possession Norwich were forced to soak up wave after wave of Cambridge attacks. Norwich barely had the ball for a good 30 minutes. After about 20 minutes Cambridge did break the Norwich defence, going over out wide. The conversion is missed. 0 – 5.

Norwich did have a good chance in the middle of this Cambridge spell with Rudyard Herbert - Oakey nearly breaking through.

The last 10 minutes saw Norwich finally retaining possession and putting together some moves. Attempts by Furness, Weaver and Herbert-Oakey  were all spurned.  From a Norwich line out the ball is worked swiftly to Herbert – Oakey who crashes over to score out wide. No conversion. 5 – 5.

Half Time

Norwich restart and soak up the early Cambridge play. This half it is Norwich who dominate the ball and therefore possession. Penned back inside their half, it is a credit to the Cambridge defence for dealing with the lively Norwich attacks. The Norwich forwards creating the Lion’s share of chances.

Cambridge concede a series of penalties that see’ Norwich advance deep into Cambridge territory. Another penalty, Norwich decided to tap and go and Herbert – Oakey hands off a few players to score near the posts. Rob Hickford converts. 12 – 5.

Cambridge press from the restart however Norwich turn over and the ball is popped up to Herbert- Oakey who runs three quarters of the pitch to score under the posts. Hickford converts. 19 – 5.

The next 15 minutes are even with Norwich keen to increase their lead. Perhaps some over exuberance saw Norwich concede some penalties that took Cambridge up to our 22.  A good passing move saw the Cambridge Full back dart over mid way out. A good kick, considering the wind, see’s the kick go over. 19 – 12.
A tense last 5 minutes ends with Norwich winning a scrum and knowing time is up, kick the ball to touch.

Final Score : 19 – 12

This was a fiercely but fairly contested game between 2 sides that hadn’t met before.  A full blooded game ,played out largely as a forwards game, due to the ever increasing winds. A draw would have been a fair result , however Norwich edged it with a great attacking spell early in the second half.
For the spectator this was a great watch, it saw 2 sides both with Great Spirit and teamwork, pitching up in game both sides wanted to win.

Thanks go to the Cambridge Players, staff and supporters for a fair, fun and friendly encounter. Thanks also to the Norwich Catering and bar staff for their work as ever.
