North Walsham 55 Norwich 0

Norwich U14s made the short trip up the road for their final Norfolk County Cup fixture with North Walsham, pretty much a dead rubber for both sides so it was agreed to treat this as a friendly. Unfortunately this also looks like it might be the last fixture of the 2019/20 season due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

By Saturday evening it was looking like we would have a strong squad available but a few inevitable Sunday morning call-offs (not surprising under the circumstances) meant we had 12.5 fit boys (the half fit boy being Freddie Rawlings who was struggling with a stomach bug).

Walsham were very accommodating and initially loaned us a prop and full back, and then a number 10 when Freddie became fully unfit to play.

Norwich started the game playing in to a stiff wind and defended stoutly until NW finally broke free on the wing to open the scoring with an unconverted try.

More dogged defending held NW up but Norwich were powerless to prevent the slick handling NW backs from running in three further tries - HT score 24-0 - no mean effort against a talented NW side.

Norwich had a bit of possession at the start of the second half but were once again carved open by NW, who took control of the game and ran in another 5 tries against the tiring Norwich boys.

This was no disgrace against an exceptional U14s team packed with Leicester Tigers DPP players and the boys can hold their heads high as they dug in and never gave up - this was noted by the Walsham parents and coaching staff.

At the start of the season I was sceptical about entering this tournament knowing the tough nature of the teams we would come up against. But I am pleased that we were able to complete all the fixtures, record one victory (so not finishing bottom), produce our best display of the season against Holt and Ellis Feeley’s try of the season against Beccles.

Next season I will be pushing the boys to challenge for a place in the top four, something I believe is achievable if we can consistently pick the same team.
