Norwich win final game of the season 17:19 at Ipswich

Norwich win final game of the season 17:19 at Ipswich

On a lovely spring day in ideal rugby conditions Norwich and Ipswich served up a stop go affair with both sides showing flashes of attacking intent interspersed with mistakes . For the first 7 minutes it was all Ipswich but Norwich held them up before getting into the game themselves.

Unusually there was no score in the first half with neither side being able to establish ascendency over the other. Ipswich’s left wing was yellow carded for not using his arms in the tackle an offence he repeated in the second half which meant that the referee had no choice but to show him a red card so the home side played the last 15 minutes of the game with 14 players.

A great break by Norwich no 8 Laurence Austin just after half time saw the visitors establish a maul near the Ipswich line from which prop forward Peter Hosking crashed over for fly half Theo Elliott to add the conversion.

Ipswich came straight back and would have scored but for a knock on near the Norwich line. However they did manage to score moments later when no 8 Chris Blom went over but fly half Ben Grimwood could not manage the conversion.

From the restart Norwich were awarded a penalty which Elliott calmly slotted to increase Norwich’s slender lead which did not last long. After some 20 minutes Ipswich ran a free kick and flanker Tui Uru went over near the posts for Grimwood to add the easy conversion to give them a  2 point lead as the game entered the last quarter.

Fortunately for Norwich Ipswich kept giving away penalties one of which resulted in the sending off. Elliott slotted 3 more penalties to put Norwich 19-12 ahead as the game went into the closing stages. In the last minute of the game Norwich somehow contrived to lose the ball at a scrum from which they only had to kick it out and that would have been that. As it was Grimwood for Ipswich raced away to score half way out but fortunately for Norwich he missed the conversion and the final whistle went to give Norwich a narrow win.

It was a fond farewell to our Australian/Kiwi Ayden Pitman who returns home in August. It was farewell as well to our physio Trudie Lewis. We thank them for spending their time with us. The boys celebrated the end of the season with a Mexican theme.
