Norfolk Under 15 plate final - Norwich 38 North Walsham 17

Norfolk Under 15 plate final - Norwich 38 North Walsham 17

Big Rugby Weekend QD Plate Final Under 15’s

This year’s Big Rugby weekend was held at Holt RFC.

North Walsham had only 12 players , so after consultation it was decided that both teams will play without flankers and that Norwich can play with 13. It is also agreed that rolling subs could be used.

With a large, vocal crowd watching,  North Walsham kicked off and after an even 10 minute period, Norwich drew first blood.

The ball was with Adam Huggins who kicked a grubber through for winger Harry Busby. The ball bounced unkindly but it was rescued by Steele Kebble who popped the ball up off the ground to the supporting inside centre Ethan Hooper who scored out wide. No Conversion. 5 – 0

Norwich conceded a penalty and a great touch kick from Walsham’s Jamie Hooker put them just metres out. From the lineout Walsham worked the ball skilfully through several pairs of hands, Hooker cut a line through the Norwich defence and scored under the posts, he converted his own try. 5 – 7

There followed another even period, then from a Norwich scrum the ball went down the line to Adam Huggins who turned on the gas to evade tacklers and score under the posts. George Hampson converted. 12 – 7
North Walsham came straight back from the restart and the powerful Alex Houghton went over out wide. No Conversion. 12 – 12

Norwich scored next, with the clock running down to half time. Norwich turned over a North Walsham scrum. George missed out inside centre, Wiktor, passing straight to Adam at outside centre. He made good ground before the ball found its way to Ethan Hooper who was forced wide to score on the stroke of halftime. No conversion. 17 – 12.

Half Time

From a North Walsham lineout, Lewis pressured the opposition ball carrier forcing him to kick ahead. Wiktor Markowski collected the bouncing ball and fed  Tom Glover who who ran onto it at speed. His momentum took him through several challenges and he scored under the posts. George converted. 24 – 12

An excellent break from Norwich saw them cross the line out wide , trying to score under the posts was too ambitious as, after riding 2 challenges, the third effort saw a Walsham player dislodge the ball. No try.

Norwich gifted the ball to Walsham from an unchallenged lineout and they set up their number 12 James but Lewis Ashwell turned up with a brilliant covering tackle. Lewis then turned defence into attack to score near the posts. George converted.  31 – 12

Lewis then caught the restart and covered well over half the pitch. He offloaded to Matty, who crossed the line  but the  match officials correctly adjudged there to have been a forward pass.

North Walsham then lost their 8 with a head injury so Norwich reduced their players by one and the influence of Donat Fistrek at 8 was missed as he moved out of the scrum to even things up.

Norwich scored again when Tom Glover ripped the ball from the Walsham 9 and it found it’s was through several hands to Donat who powered over under the posts. George converted. 38 – 12.

Virtually from the kick off Walsham struck back, scoring in the corner. No conversion. 38 – 17
Norwich pressed again looking for more tries but looking a bit vulnerable to counter attacks.  A North Walsham run down our right flank is ended by touch and from the  lineout , Norwich kicked the ball dead and the game ended with a final score of 38: 17.

This improving side has claimed 2 plates in 3 weeks. Today the whole team played well. Well done to you all.

The backs tried some new moves today that gave us an edge. These were taught to them by their excellent backs coach, Rob Mick, thanks go to him for this recent vein of form.

North Walsham certainly played their part in this match. They were always a threat and never let Norwich relax.
Thanks to the Ref’s , to Holt RFC, to the organisers for a great day but weekend overall. Long may it continue.
To a player you have all done yourselves proud, as well as your coaches, your parents and your Club.

Great Tour, Great Season.
