Amersham & Chiltern 63 Norwich 13

Amersham & Chiltern 63 Norwich 13

A depleted Norwich side suffered a heavy defeat in their opening game of the new season in South Bucks. The game started badly when defensive alignment errors in the visitor’s backs allowed the hosts to get two early tries.

Without a recognised kicker Norwich left 10 kickable points on the field but Conan Hoey slotted a good long range penalty to register Norwich’s only points of the half.

Amersham enjoyed superior pace in their backs and exploited it well to end the first half 31:3.

Ironically, given the final score, Norwich had much the better of the second half, enjoying probably 80% of territory and possession with the forwards taking it to the home pack who did not get out of their half for the first 20 minutes.

As the game wore on, the difference was that once ball was turned over, the quicker Amersham backs exploited their pace superiority well with some late tries considerably inflating the size of the defeat.

Norwich scored two tries of their own in the second half with Cameron Horide making a break down the left wing before being stopped and Dave Micklethwaite picking up and bursting through the resulting ruck to score out wide. The conversion was missed.

Norwich scored again with Ollie Emanuel breaking through on the right wing to go over.

With four easy tries scored at the end of the game as Norwich ran out of steam, a difficult afternoon concluded.  There were reasons for optimism in the second half and Norwich will hope that with better availability next week, a more consistent performance will be possible.
