Colchester 74 Norwich 22

Colchester 74 Norwich 22

This was a classic game of two halves, Norwich started very brightly and after ten minutes Theo Elliot’s pass found Ollie Emanuel in space, he made good ground before releasing Stuart Martin on the wing for a very well worked try which was converted by Elliot.

Colchester came back strongly and despite some excellent defensive work by Jonny Wheater and Lewy Bailey against a strong Colchester centre pairing they scored wide out for an unconverted try.

Colchester pushed again but Norwich were resolute in defence and won a penalty in front of the posts, a moment of poor discipline then cost Norwich as the penalty was reversed and Colchester kicked the three points to take the lead. Norwich again did themselves no favours as a quickly taken lineout went straight to the Colchester winger who ran in unopposed for the try.

Norwich responded well and Theo Elliot’s defence splitting pass put Ollie Emanuel through for a try to leave the score 20-17 at half time.

The second half was painful viewing for the Norwich support, Colchester ran in seven tries with Norwich not really having any quality possession. The Norwich side simply seemed to capitulate, falling off tackles and allowing an impressive Colchester side free reign around the park.

A late try from Stuart Martin try was scant consolation for a Norwich side who had shown so much promise in the first half. Norwich must now gather them selves for a bottom of the table clash with Thurrock next week.
