Chingford 30 Norwich 17
Chingford 30 Norwich 17
This was another winnable game for Norwich that they let slip in a fragmented and error-strewn performance by both sides. The score was inflated by two late Chingford tries but in truth there was very little between them.
The visitors were significantly disadvantaged from the outset with the loss of Adam Huggins who pulled a hamstring in the warm up and took no part in the game.
The first try came after 10 minutes from Chingford’s first foray deep into Norwich territory from a lineout on the left that was worked wide across to the right to go over in the corner. The kick was missed.
Norwich hit back straight away building patiently through the phases when Ollie Emanuel made a good break to release Stuart Martin on the left wing who rounded to defence to score under the posts Theo Elliott added the conversion.
Norwich put some good attacking phases together but the blight of their afternoon was handling errors across the backs that allowed promising moves the break down. As a direct consequence of this, Chingford profited with their second try that they converted. Norwich’s edged closer from a Theo Elliott penalty but on the stroke of half time Chingford added three points from a penalty to go in at 15:10.
Norwich lost fly half Elliott early in the second half to injury but neither side found it easy to complete phases with the blight of handling errors affecting both equally. The score remained unchanged for most of the half but Norwich had the greater amount of territory and a sizeable amount of the possession, they just couldn’t make it count.
With 15 minutes left, Chingford seized on some poor Norwich passing to set up camp deep in the visitors territory for the first time in that half. Despite some solid Norwich defending, it sucked players in and created space out wide for Chingford to score.
A missed tackle on the left wing allowed Chingford an easy score under the posts to seize the game 27:10. Norwich didn’t give up and attacked again with a good run downfield by Dave Micklethwaite that resulted in a Norwich penalty kick to the corner. Norwich caught and drove the lineout that Chingford illegally halted. They went through the same process a second time with Micklethwaite going over at the back of the maul. Conan Hoey added the points to leave Norwich 10 points adrift.
