Johnny Marsters – Director of Rugby
Norwich Rugby Club have appointed Johnny Marsters as Director of Rugby from the 2023/24 season.
Chairman Stuart Burrell said “We are delighted to welcome Johnny as our new Director of Rugby who brings to the club a wealth of playing and coaching experience. Johnny was the clear standout of all the people we spoke to and we look forward to him helping drive the club forwards in the years to come.”
New Zealand-born Marsters, who has been involved in coaching for over 30 years, captained the All Blacks at Under 21 level and in a long professional career played for Natal Sharks and Northern Free State in South Africa and then Swansea and Saracens, before going part time with London Welsh and Ealing.
He said “When the opportunity came around to join Norwich RFC as DOR, it was an easy decision. My son Ollie joined the club a few seasons ago and is now enjoying off-season rugby at my old Club North Shore RFC in the North Habour competition in NZ. He is hoping to bring back his experiences for this season.” He continued “Norwich and North Shore Rugby clubs are very similar, both established in the early 1870's, full of rich history that has covered all generations up to the modern day. With their ever growing boys and girls Youth sections and Minis, they have big aspirations including a women’s team.”
I am excited to join an already experienced coaching group, all believing in the same core values that the game has to offer and to create a pathway for the next generation of girls and boys.
We welcome all abilities and encourage players new and old to come to training and have a go. Training for all Seniors and Colts players are on Tuesday and Thursday nights 7pm- 8.30pm.
Anyone that would like to know more can email him on Johnnymarsters1@gmail.com.
General Information
Norwich Rugby Club runs three adult sides. There is a team for you whatever the level of rugby you wish to play. We have a very strong club ethos and we must recruit and develop as much talent as possible from within our own ranks. The Mini, Boys Youth and Girls sections are vital to this long term and sustainable growth.
Several senior squad players volunteer and coach on a Sunday but more are always welcome if only on an occasional basis.
Each senior team has a set of pages on the website detailing more about the team and the contacts. The coaching staff encourage as many players as possible from all the senior teams to train together and raise their game. Training nights are Tuesday & Thursday from 1900hrs. Ring for pre season arrangements as we do occasionally use other training venues.
